Legal Alberta Phone Book

Alberta Government Telephones was managed directly by the province`s Department of Public Works as a public utility until 1958, when it was transformed into the Alberta Government Telephones Commission, a Crown corporation. From 1945 to 1960, AGT operated the province`s educational radio station, CCUA. Telus` Yellow Pages were reduced and 10-decade-old Alberta phone books were given to the Medicine Hat Telus Community Ambassador volunteer group. The ambassadors, in turn, donated the phone books and their shelves to the Medicine Hat Genealogical Society to digitize and store them as a unit. The project is ongoing until completion. Telephones were established in Alberta in 1885 and began to spread throughout the province after the Bell Telephone Company was established in Calgary in 1887. Bell refused to extend its services to rural areas, believing that they were not profitable. As a result, Alberta began building rural telephone lines in 1907 and took over Bell`s provincial infrastructure the following year to form a division that became Alberta Government Telephones. In 1990, the Government of Alberta began privatizing AGT and established Telus Communications as a holding company to facilitate the transfer. In 1991, the Province of Alberta sold its remaining AGT shares to Telus for $870 million. Telus acquired Edmonton Telephones Corporation (Ed Tel) from the City of Edmonton in 1995; Ed Tel had been founded only five years earlier. In 1996, the AGT and Ed Tel brands were dropped in favour of the Telus name.

Telus merged with BC Tel in 1999 to form what is now Telus Corporation. All rights reserved.
