Lawyers` fees are negotiated between you and the lawyer referred to you. Only the initial consultation fee is administered by the Alabama State Bar. All other fees are at the discretion of the lawyer. When discussing representation costs with the referred lawyer, be sure to distinguish between fees and expenses such as filing fees and other third-party fees that will be charged for your case. Lawyers charge based on time and type of work, how difficult it is to resolve the problem, and your needs as a client. The Legal Placement Service recommends that you request a written fee agreement before proceeding with the legal work beyond the first 30-minute consultation. Each year, more than 1,000 people receive legal advice or representation through our program. The Lawyer Referral Service (“LRS”) is a program offered by the Alabama State Bar Association to help the public find a lawyer who can be hired to meet their overall legal needs. The Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program (MCVLP) is a nonprofit pro bono program supported by the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association. Through the MCVLP, area attorneys provide free legal assistance in certain civil cases to low-income citizens of Madison County. The Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program was organized in 1982 and is the oldest pro bono program in Alabama. Each year, the MCVLP provides underrepresented citizens of Madison County with access to the civil justice system by referring them to dedicated and knowledgeable lawyers.
The Alabama Legal Services offices only handle civil matters. Each office has licensed attorneys in Alabama and other staff members who know how to help low-income people resolve their legal problems. MCVLP offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities. Most lawyers volunteer their time by advising an MCVLP client at a legal clinic or providing extended pro bono representation. Legal Services Alabama (“LSA”) is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal assistance in various areas to qualified low-income families in Alabama`s 67 counties.
